Illustration Friday: Return

There's so much wrong with this picture, technically. But all I wanted to do was make art and play with color, so on that front, it works!
The model I used was a tiny, pixelated picture and I couldn't make out enough detail to refine my drawing. I don't do many portraits either.
I knew I wanted to paint mangoes on her dress and make this very primitive looking but vibrant in color.
I guess I did those things, but still, it could be better.

So here we have my entry for this week.
I hope you're all having anything but a manic Monday!

  1. I think you are being hard on yourself finding "things wrong" with this beautiful painting. It FEELS good to me and looks good too. I like all the mix of papers and paint and pencils.

  2. Nice warm colors. It's the sentiment of the art (the accompanying words) that tugs at my heart though. There wasn't a day or a moment that I didn't long for Japan, in particular Hokkaido, while I was going to college in the US. The smells in the air, the slant of the sun, natural and artificial sounds--so much of what my senses took in each day reminded me that I was far from home.

  3. I like it - it's primitive and sweet, and gives a feeling that I can't describe.

  5. Oh, we artists are our own worst critics! I really like this, so full of color and I love how you've included text. Nice take on the topic!

  6. The words and the picture are perfect together. I believe it and it is lovely. I can feel the homesick feeling and I see it in her face , so I think you made a good piece of art, but then again I think I always do.

  10. Your painting evokes just the right amount of tropical warmth....one can smell the fragrant, warm air....and her eyes show you she remembers another time when she was happy.....another beautiful melding of words and painting....

    Love,

  13. Sometimes ya just gotta let the muse do what she wants. I like it. It does look like primitive island art. Puts me in the mood for the beach.

  15. She is graceful. You can tell just by the way she holds her hands.

And she is comfortable with her body; no weight angst. However, her sleek arms cause me envy!

Not to mention island envy. :-)

  17. That's just so typical,,,looking for the 'what's wrong' in the work.

    Guilty, often!
But I try to remember that (at least for me) the joy is in the process, and it's all good.

It's a beautiful painting, colorful and peaceful all at the same time. So stop it, right now!

  19. so bright and colorful. It may not be what you had pictured in your mind, but it is still quite good. For those of us who did not have a preconceived idea of how it should look, it's wonderful! I really like your "swamp" pic from last week too. I've enjoyed catching up with your adventures - how awesome that you got to spend time with Marianne in NY!

  20. Lo, I like what Lynn said, you are being to hard on yourself. Art is about love not perfection.
And speaking of love, that piece that Suki made for you is wonderful and full of love.
    Happy Easter! xoxo
