Animal Wednesday: carousel














This beautiful carousel is within walking distance from me. It's one of the most famous ones in the country with rare hand-carved animals, NOT plastic resin.

Sixty-six beautifully carved figures designed c. 1895 by Charles I.D. Looff. The band organ by A. Ruth and Sohn, in neo-baroque style, is carved with moving figures. The finest surviving example of its type in America, the carousel was proclaimed the State Symbol of Folk Art in 1985. Designated as a National Landmark in March, 1987.

What a day and fun place to take pictures.

    I absolutely adore merrygorounds! And I am laughing as Suki asked my first question was can you ride this one or is it just for show? So pretty!!!!!
    We have a nice one in my town too and it is a working carousel!!!

    Fabulous carousel,,,I hope you took a ride,,,but maybe it's not permitted, as it is such a work of art.

    Wow! This is truly gorgeous - it's amazing. I adore merry-go-rounds and love to ride them - especially to catch the gold ring. I would love to see and ride this one with you someday

    I am a Carousel Lover too!!! This one is gorgeous!! I HOPE we can go on a ride when I come to visit!
    How great all of us bloggers want to go for a ride! Wouldn't that make for a great photo!

    We have a lovely one in Golden Gate Park..I am not sure how old it is, but it was already really old when my parents took me there as a child.... hmm....time to do some research and take some photos!

    I LOVE THESE!!! I love carousels and I used to own a full size plastic carousel horse, compliments of my DH. Try to find a place in YOUR house for one of those. Sheesh!

    Carousels are amazing, but kind of frightening to me as a child too and they still bring on that little bit of fantastical fear in me. This is truly a national treasure!
