Naked Baby Raven

I'm trying to branch out and play with new mediums and materials.
This was my first time using paper clay. I sat in the studio last night and decided to try to make a baby raven. I didn't look at anything while shaping this guy. I just went from the images in my head from drawing and painting so many of them.

I wanted him to look inquisitive.

Hello there cutie!

Another tip of the head.

I know he doesn't look ravenesque yet...but wait until he dries and I sand him into shape, and paint him in all his glorious irridescent blues and purples.
His eyes are black Swarovski crystals.

Hopefully I can show you the finished results in a few days.
I want to list more things on Etsy that I can make more money from.
I really don't think I can part with my first born though;)

Stay tuned!

  3. How talented of you in this new branch and to find a bird on it yet! What is paper clay? Do you make it from paper and something else yourself or buy it? Just curious. Am not thinking of following suit. Your raven indeed looks curious and cute. Looking forward to seeing him in full feather. Of course you can't sell your first born!!! ;-)

  4. You are amazing! But I already told you that!
It is your first try working in 3D and in a new material and this result is awesome , so you must have a talent for this as well!
Well I guess there are no limits to your creativity!
Love those shiny eyes! Great idea!
Can't wait to see it finished!

  5. It goes to show that my BS is so talented in all genres of art! All I can say is: WOW! He is already gorgeous - and curious - but when he gets his true colours, he will be gorgeous!!!!

However, you CANNOT put him on Etsy..he is your FIRST - and you must keep him!

Love from your very proud LS,

  6. This is pretty cool, actually I think it looks good already, even before the paint.

It's good to try new media, but for me I find that in the end I always return to my usual illustrative habits!

  8. This is darling. I like the way you have its head tilted. It makes it seem real. It will look real after being painted.

  9. He has that same inquisitive look as Sweet Pea when she is peeking out, trying to see what I am up to!
Last night must have been Paper Clay night, as I was working on a Sacred Heart. (lifted it this morning and the flames promptly fell off. Oh well, that's what GLUE is for ....LOL!)

  18. Adorable and with the cocked head he looks totally curious. Give him some time. By the time he grows up, he will be totally ravenesque.

I reading more and more about paperclay. By the time I get around to using it, it will be so old hat and something new will be coming down the pike.

  19. How did you like the paperclay? Isn't it fun to play with?

I love that you sculpted this from memory and imagination - he definitely looks inquisitive.

I love the painted raven, but I love this ghost raven too. Have you ever read the book Blackbird House by Alice Hoffman? I know yours is a raven but yours reminded of her white blackbird ...
