I love sitting by the marsh late in the afternoon, especially in October.
Maxfield Parrish skies reflected on the glass-like surface of the water, and for a moment I was convinced I saw hundreds of shimmering Koi. Since this wasn't likely the case, I took a closer look and realized it was fallen leaves. They looked like tiny flames on the pond's surface, extinguishing themselves by eventually sinking to the bottom.
As I looked across the marsh I smiled at the reflection of three cypress trees together. Those of you who know my work know they represent my three late cats. I honor them in my paintings whenever I can.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone. Thanks for stopping by my 200th post!
(For Illustration Friday : Late)

Although there is no autumn here but I still can feel the intense weather & beauty from a great distance. Simply amazing!
Love your illusion for not the Koi fish but actually falling leaves...
That reminds me of a magical morning I spent by a lake late in the year. Dottie (much younger then) played happily in the mud and I leaned on a log for a doze. I awoke to see a beaver swimming lazily by not 3 feet away. Good times.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful depth to this piece - I think the colours you've used are luscious! Wonderfully done, yet again!

ReplyDeletemaxfield parrish was one of my first favorite artists. i read that he was really frustrated with his art and wanted to do a different kind; I *think* he was working in advertising at the time...
ReplyDeleteOh Laurel - this is so beautiful! I was so drawn into your description that I think I would have seen your painting even with my eyes closed! The oranges are gorgeous against the deep blue of the water, and the shadowy reflection of the cypress trees adds a wonderful, mystical touch. How lovely that they represent your sweet departed cats:>
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful painting and the way you described it, the way you wrote about it, was so touching and poetic.
ReplyDeleteWow, your 200th post! Congratulations!!! :-)
I've had a hard time the last few months keeping up with everyone so forgive me but...
ReplyDelete1st your sugary is one of my favorites...perfect expression and so simple yet expressive...it needs framed...
The bear spread is really nice. I really like the composition and the detail work of the landscape...
and lastly...Late...wow...the debris field in the water really adds the perfect touch to this...it would be easy to under or overstate this area but you handled it perfectly...I like how you cut the top portion off and didn't expand it further than what you did...really really nice and another one that I would love to have hanging on my wall...
This is just beautiful!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat more can I add. This takes my breath away. And I love the thought of hundreds of shimmering koi. They will always be koi in my mind.
ReplyDeleteHappy 200! Wow!
