IF : Snap-on-ears, etc.

Okay...what's up with people who feel the need to dress up their dogs? I'm not talking about sweaters to keep the delicate little breeds warm, or maybe even a tasteful bandana. I'm talking bunny ears and antlers, fairies and bumblebees and pirates and ballerinas.
My friend's daughter had her adorable Shih Tzu in a full pink party dress last week. People, people, people. That's just wrong! Ever ask yourself why there are pet therapists on this planet? These guys need therapy and heavy drugs after being paraded around in polyester with sequins and headbands with ears. No wonder most of them SNAP!!
I will say this though. Some of those get-ups have made my head SNAP in their direction. Especially if it's an outfit I wish I had.

(This post is in memory of, and apologies to Mooshi and Joni who I did put Santa hats on.)

graphite, watercolor and colored pencil on a grocery bag from Trader Joes. Click to make the doggy big and scary.

  12. Hi Laurel...Yes, Xanax would be applicable!like you've said the therapy for pets is misdirected help considering where most of the crazy is coming from;) Love the lively shadow color.

  13. This is ggreat! Funny! and I agree. (Reminds me of a great film, "A Christmas Story"- as the main character, Ralphie, is humiliated in a similar fashion).

  15. I agree about the animal dressing (even though MY dog would look so cute in a nice handknit).

Great illustration! And bulldogs? they only look scary; they're really little sweatpeas. But mine would definitely snap...something if I put ears on him.

  16. What a wonderful job, on a brown paper bag to boot! Poor pooch. I wouldn't blame him for getting upset either.

  17. The rendering of the bulldog is so good. You know, I think some dog owners let the dog carry out their own fantasies -full pink party dress, I LOL when I read that.
Great work and funny, on a paper bag, wow!

  21. I hear you! You picked a great breed to show off the bunny years. That's like putting a tutu on a wrestler. ;~)

  23. This really made me laugh, Laurel! Poor pup with bloody rabbit ears ;-) I remember my favorite dog, Sammy. My brother and I would dress him in a t-shirt, shorts and sunglasses. Actually, he was a good sport about it, but you could tell him was a little humiliated, we of course, thought is was hilarious. He was a smart dog dealing with silly, dumb kids. This is very sweet.

  24. Great drawing, your bulldog looks perfect (and justifiably upset about the bunny ears!) I also prefer dogs just as they are (though my beagle does have a raincoat for rainy days. It's for rainy days! To keep her dry! :-)
    Great style, very nice work!

  25. Hehehe such an angry doggie! And excusably so. I dont understand the dog dressing phenomenon either. Maybe they dont have kids to adorn with silly costumes? Or if they do, do the children suffer too?
    :-D

  30. This one bears an uncanny resemblance to my flawed attempt at a personal ad.

Thanks for your kind words on my blog. I hasten to say that I am a lot better looking than either of those guys ( at least if I squint when I look at myself in the mirror.)

  34. I missed this post. It's so cute! And I'm sorry to say that I dressed Sully in a bowling shirt for Halloween one year. But, he tore it to shreds. He wrote about it in his diary... which I posted just for you at my blog. I'm a dork! Thanks for all your kind words on my site.
