Phyllis discovered she had a natural talent for playing the scales through her nostrils.
For some reason I found myself humming "Puff the Magic Dragon" while drawing this. Honest. It was torture!
acrylic, Prismacolor pencils, Pitt pen, collage notes and rubber stamp wings on a scrap of cardboard.

Hey Lolo! Yea! you are on the front page! You totally deserve it. ...and... what a sweet dragon, I love all of the mediums you used to create this one.
ReplyDelete"Puff the magic dragon" is Ted's least favorite song, he gets really irritated if he hears it because then in runs in his head all day long... Hmmmmm wonder if I should torture him.
LOL @ this piece, Laurel! Nice job and, as princess says, congrats on getting the front page for last week. Well, gotta go, I have this song looping in my head and it won't go away! :O
ReplyDeleteHey Sis-
ReplyDeleteWay to go!! You deserve the front page not only for your art but also your words.
Also Joshy would love this one.
Another gorgeous piece, and congratulations on being 'Pick of the Week'!
ReplyDeleteGreat Dragon! Great idea. Congrats on your Illo Fri pic! How awesome is that! That design was sooo very cool.
ReplyDeleteAnd 89 comments on it to boot. Way to go "Lo Lo A Go Go"! (I hope you don't mind that nickname).

ReplyDeletebeautiful dragon and talented too...
ReplyDeletewhat a beautiful dragon! :) love this!

I tried to leave a comment on the great hat image, but I guess 91 comments is enough! Also loved the one on scale here. Wow! Great work! Great blog! I'm bookmarking this one to check in regularly...
ReplyDeleteHey Laurel- CONGRATULATIONS! Great job on the Hats project! I really enjoy your moleskine sketches too- I have one, but I am always afraid to draw on the pages!
ReplyDeleteTake care-
John
Love the dragon...beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWho doesn't love a scaly dragon? A charmer! My husband managed Peter Paul and Mary and i've always been partil to that song!
ReplyDeleteanother imaginative illustration. delightful. keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteI thought of that song as well Laurel! Anyhow, an other wonderful job here and huge congrats on IF pick of the week!! happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteThis is fantastic - I LOVE the gossamer wings - perfect for flying around a rather substantial dragon. It's all the better for her name being Phyllis...
ReplyDeletePhyllis is quite the lovely dragon! And she has such great musical taste:> I love your hats illustration below as well.
ReplyDeletehello talented dragon!
ReplyDeleteI've always loved "Puff." but your dragon is cuter.
ReplyDeleteLovely dragon! Love the way you incorporated all kinds of mediums when creating this! :) Congrats again on pick of the week!
ReplyDeleteVery sweet. I especially like the colors ... the blues, greens, and purples work very nicely together. Congratulations on being the pick of the week for "hats"!
ReplyDeleteBeatiful colors and adorable character!
ReplyDeletePhyllis has beautiful green scales. When he was very small, my son had a tiny stuffed Puff that played the song when wound up.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting!
ReplyDeleteGreat piece. I really like the texture...
Phyllis should stop singing that song or she will never find a mate. I like how you used 2 version of the word. I thought about drawing Sully with scales, on a scale, singing scales, while scaling the mountain... but it was too much for one illustration. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat illo, Laurel! Hahaha..I can imagine the torture humming through your nostrils!
ReplyDeletevery nice piece this week...you're on a roll! love the dragon.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny when a tune gets stuck in your head. Well Phyllis herself is quite an elegant scaly creature practicing the scales. This topic is so diverse, it's amazing what people come up with. This is lovely.
ReplyDeleteLove the texture and softness - this image looks SO different close up! Lovely illu.
ReplyDeleteFUNtastic!
ReplyDeleteeasy to fall in love with such a sweet dragon...
She's darling. Such pretty eyes and wings ;) I can see Phyllis soaring through the sky puffing out songs along the way. It is magic! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteyou did it again, what an amusing idea. now i'll be humming 'puff the ...' all evening!
ReplyDeleteoh what a sweet dragon.well done. uhmmmmmmmI am singing the song now......
ReplyDeleteSuch an awesome dragon! Beautifully done.
ReplyDeleteohh cute!! and gee have i disappeared from the IF world that long? we have more than 300 contributions already and its only Monday! woah.. how will i ever find you guys among the flooded thumbnails? hehe..
ReplyDeleteand here I thought you were going to talk about the scales on her body... not the ones in her mouth!
ReplyDeleteShe is very cute!
ReplyDeleteCall David Letterman!! Hahaha
ReplyDeleteYour portrait of Phyllis is beautiful! Peaceful expression and colors- always love visiting here. (I don't even mind that you got me humming that 'P.T.M.D' song now too- it's not such a bad song- but over and over- well...).
Ohh- and congratulations on being pick of week! So well deserved!
Great interpretation of 'scale'! She has the most beautiful eyes, and a very good voice.
ReplyDeleteCongrats again on the 'pic of the week'. Double wow!
Dragons are my favorite people, and this guy is especially adorable.

What a beauty!
ReplyDeleteVery cool, again!
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm not sure if I'll be branded a complete dork for this, but I LOVED Puff when I was little and this is just what I imagined him to look like. haha, I very much enjoy your words too... ;-)
ReplyDeletei love his purple belly.
ReplyDeletei've found that one good way to get rid of earworm is to find more earworm.
when's the last time you heard the doublemint gum song?
and yes! congratulations! it was a perfect choice!
What a cute "scaley" dragon, Laurel. Thanks for your kind comments regarding Mrs. T's foray into the deserts of Mongolia. More adventures are just around the bend.
ReplyDeleteWhat great fun! :)
ReplyDeleteHappy dragon, I like it!!
ReplyDeleteBesos
I like the cardboard use...great colors and use of mixed media as well...I hate when I do my favorite stuff on scaps myself lol...
ReplyDeletelol! where you hummin "Puff the Magic Dragon" in repeat mode? ohh i call that "the last song syndrome".. this is a cool illo to go with that!
